Fire Alarm Component/Device Types
Fire Alarm Systems start with the simplest being a local Alarm Bell triggered by water flowing in an activated Sprinkler System. Unfortunately this does little more than help the Fire Truck to find the building after someone calls them since its is usually difficult to hear the outside bell from within a commercial building.
By connecting the Water Flow Switch (or Heat or Smoke devices) to an Electronic Control Panel we can do a better job of notifying people of an alarm condition, including alerting a local guard shack or office and a remote or central station off premises
Typical Components added to Sprinkler Components creating a full Fire Alarm System
Typically the earlier, conventional panels provided power to its devices, monitored the Initiating Devices (inputs) for an alarm condition, monitored for basic wiring problems like opens & short circuits, then applied signaling power to the Notification Devices (outputs) and called a Monitoring Station to electronically advise of a fire condition. Even simple Manual Pull Stations that merely "rang the bell" can now be used to alert the Fire department through a Panel.

Features may be added to expand effectiveness of detection to provide early warning as with Heat or Smoke Detectors. For instance, Alarm Check Valves are used to allow a sprinkler to trigger the alarm and delay water flow for short duration (Simple Preaction System). Sample Slide Show System & Alarm
Features can be added to minimize property water damage by having early detection devices interact with the sprinkler or suppression system to prevent discharge during false alarms or conditions that can by controlled without a water suppression system discharge (Double Interlock Preaction System). Chemicals other than water, such as foam and gases can be used as the extinguishing agent.

Some types of buildings or building usages may require a simple Horn and Strobe to Notify occupants that the Spinkler System is flowing water. Other types and usage may require a variety of sounding and lighting devices to fully alert and assist occupants in evacuating the building.

Additionally, web based monitoring software can provide instant status reports to Owners, Managers and Service Companies as well as providing expanded location information to the Monitoring Company and local Fire Authority during alarm conditions.
